We are delighted to be returning to the British Art Fair next week with a stand dedicated to the work of celebrated sculptor Lynn Chadwick (1914-2003). Showcasing the breadth of his oeuvre across four distinct decades, this curated selection will include beast and couple sculptures, alongside rare drawings and lithographs. The British Art Fair is the UK’s only fair dedicated exclusively to Modern and Contemporary British Art and is set within the iconic Saatchi Gallery in the heart of London’s vibrant Chelsea. Our stand is located on the ground floor to the right as as you enter the Saatchi Gallery.

Second Maquette for Teddy Boy and Girl

Chadwick's solo exhibition for the Venice Biennale in 1956 included the large centrepiece 'Teddy Boy and Girl', 1955, which was a substantial piece at nearly two metres tall. With arms up-stretched and conjoined at the pelvis the Teddy Boy and Girl sculptures, such as this charming maquette, were a vital take on contemporary culture.

Printmaking provided Chadwick with an intimate, immediate way to continue his visual thought process, distilling sculptural ideas to their purest forms. Chadwicks 'Moon Series' explored a more abstracted vision of the moon, incorporating the rounded corners of early photographs, crescent shapes, and deep shadows to form eye-like compositions; motifs that echoed contemporaneous sculptures such as 'Star III', which we will also show at the fair.

The Stranger

This striking early work by Lynn Chadwick is an important sculpture that charts the progression of the figure in his work. Conceived in 1954 during the exciting period that Chadwick was gaining international fame for his unique visual language, 'The Stranger' bears reference to prehistoric cave painting, the natural world and contemporary culture.
