Where the Light Lands: Impressions of Muskoka

Abstract Landscape

This October, we are proud to present Abstract Landscape, an exhibition celebrating four distinct approaches to abstraction and landscape. We are bringing together the work of artists from across Canada and across generations in an exploration of how place can be remembered, reconstructed, fragmented and reimagined through colour, form, technology and personal experience.

Tiko Kerr

is a multidisciplinary Vancouver-based artist whose bold abstractions and collages explore Canadian identity and the fragmented nature of contemporary life. Diagnosed with HIV in 1985, Kerr is also an important health advocate whose landmark 2005 legal battle against the Canadian government helped secure emergency access to life-saving antiretroviral drugs. His more than four-decade artistic practice spans painting, collage, murals and public art.

Hank Bull

is a Vancouver-based artist whose decades-long practice spans painting, photography, video, performance, music and sound. A longtime member of Vancouver’s Western Front Society and co-founder of Centre A, his career has been shaped by experimentation, collaboration and international artistic exchange.

James Wyper

is a BC-based artist known for vibrant geometric paintings exploring consciousness, meditation and transcendence. His work considers painting as a physical expression of inner states, using colour, form and abstraction to create energetic, contemplative compositions.

Quinn Hopkins

is a Toronto-based (Mixed Ojibwe, non-status) interdisciplinary artist blending urban Indigenous experiences with digital futurism. Influenced by Indigenous futurists like Cannupa Hanska Luger, Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun and Skawennati, Hopkins’s immersive installations and digital artworks explore ancestral storytelling, technological innovation and cultural resurgence.

These artists represent an exciting expansion of our contemporary Canadian collection.

These final lazy days of summer have the gallery team reading The Astronaut Children of Dunbar by Wiley Wei-Chiun Ho as we prepare for our Author Talk on September 22.

Wiley's book tells the true story of her family moving from Taiwan to Vancouver, Canada, in 1979 and her parents later returning to Taiwan for work while leaving their children behind.

Book an appointment with Cowley Abbott who are back visiting the gallery, to see if we can find any treasures in our corner of the world. Fake or Fortune Oakville style!

During their last visit, they shared the remarkable story of a David Bowie portrait discovered in a donation centre that later sold for more than $108,000 CAD.

Perhaps your family heirloom, inherited painting, or forgotten attic find has a story of its own. You never know what treasures might be hiding in plain sight.

Proceeds from this event will be donated to The Lighthouse for Grieving Children & Families.

Beyond the Gallery Walls

We are delighted to share that owner Cindy Cottrelle has joined the Board of Oakville Galleries, continuing her longstanding commitment to supporting artists, fostering community and championing the visual arts.

Our Gallery Director Claudia Pettigrew is jurying the Fine Arts Society of Milton's Juried Art Show and Sale, The Holcim Gallery, Sept 26th.

While Curation and Community Consultant Alix Scott has been traveling out to the West Coast engaging with artists and bringing new artists to our roster.

Our Sales Consultant Cynthia Das has been visiting galleries internationally and appreciating art.

We would also like to welcome our newest member of the team Nikita Helewa who brings extensive knowledge of contemporary and classical art.
