Thrilled to be making our debut at Art On Paper in New York

Dear #firstname#,

What goes with wet hair, sun-kissed skin and a fresh ocean breeze? The answer is: art.

Even though there’s one month to go and summer is so delightful, my team and I are counting the days until September when we’ll be making our debut at Art on Paper in New York, the art fair that has established itself as an exciting promoter of artworks on paper.

Cynthia Corbett Gallery is thrilled to present a special curation at Art on Paper - Booth C03 running during New York art week, September 8-11, 2022 at Pier 36, New York City, coinciding with The Armory Show. Our curation will feature wonderful works on paper by Deborah Azzopardi, Christina Benz, Klari Reis, Isabelle van Zeijl, Tuëma Pattie, Cristina Schek, Alastair Gordon, Matt Smith and Andy Burgess.

To stimulate the mind, and dazzle the imagination, the following summer weeks, I'll be introducing you to the artists and artworks we'll be presenting in New York, this September.

Making Her Debut at Art On Paper, New York
8-11 September 2022

We've known, represented and admired the talent of Christina Benz for a long time. Cynthia Corbett Gallery first presented her work in 2005, when we showed her multiscreen projection video installation Water (Pending Series) at London Art Fair, ARCO and Artissima and subsequently we exhibited her video installations at VOLTA Basel (2010) and VOLTA New York (2011).

Christina Benz lives and works in Zurich, she studied Fine Art at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, University of the Arts, London from 2001-2004 and has completed a Masters degree in Fine Arts at Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) from 2008-2010. Her work has been selected for solo shows at international art fairs and her video installations have been exhibited in galleries in Zurich, London, Barcelona and Brussels. Collections include Mark Vanmoerkerke, Oostende, Belgium, Okolje Consulting d.o.o, Celje, Slovenia, Fundación Centro Ordóñez/Falcón de Fotografía of San Sebastian and WMG Limited, Photography Foundation, London.

Christina Benz' works are visual statements on today's society. The most recent works focus on media culture in particular. Benz touches upon issues of identity linked to consumerism, branding, celebrity obsession and self promotion through reality media programs. Previous works deal with the fragility of being and contain minimal scenarios with dark but humorous undertones. Many of the protagonists are constrained in prolonged repetitive situations, however undeterred they continually strive to change their situation.
Christina Benz, Lorem ipsum Series, 2021. Drawing series, ink and water colour on Arches paper with deckle edges (300 g/m2),56 x 76 cm (22 x 30"), 2018 - today
Lorem ipsum is the title for a new series of drawings in ink and gouache on paper we're delighted to introduce to the Art On Paper audience in New York. The drawings are inspired by the aesthetics of ancient botanical illustrations. Instead of fieldwork and precise observations, however, the drawing process is exactly the opposite. The starting point is a colourful spot of colour. Once this is set, a black ink pencil takes over; it reacts to the colourful initial action and forms associative structures around the colour in great detail, which seem organic but defy clear classification.

The title pretends to be Latin. In graphic design, lorem ipsum is used as a placeholder for a text that has yet to be written.
