“A little jewel of a Sutton” by Marianna Penturo
“Looking deeply at this painting, of its juxtaposition of shapes, colour and line, one becomes aware of its hidden secrets and importance… of Shakespeare, the character portrayed, and the encompassment of Sutton, the master and environmentalist.
The actor’s mane portrayed, mirrors the artists surrounding that were, in Manorbier, Wales. The beckoning blackbirds that would avidly awake amongst the hedges of emerald, feverously alerting the artist to an exciting visitor. The sitter’s angular beard, reminiscent of Manorbier’s rugged cliffs amongst a tempestuous sea. The deep indigo bleed, of the infinite, acts as a theatre drop to the actor’s temperance. His insight and perception is written within the all-knowing eye ….. There is a familiarity to his guise. I often dwell on Sam Wanamaker’s and Sutton’s friendship. The endless reimaginings of a new Shakespeare’s Globe theatre for those curious and searching.
