Patina Paintings (Gebrauchsbilder) are standard, mass-produced canvases in various formats that the artist has placed in specific locations for a certain time period, or given to collectors and institutions for their own use over a limited period of time. As Harald Welzer noted in his text on Karin Sander's work “From the moment of its acquisition it is left to them whether they install such a work in their sports car or leave it in their basement or carry it about as a constant travel accessory (like a toiletries bag). In any case the canvas will be covered with some kind of a coat of dust, dirt, mould, notes or whatever else crosses the path of the wok and its owner. These works are also self-portraits of their owners, at least they show traces of a use that could only take place with this individual and his or her specific way of life. In the context of an exhibition they seem as auratic as any other painting; this can represent an affront to actual painters.”

Karin Sander began the Patina Painting series in the late 1990’s. The titles of the works refer to the places where they were 'produced' and to the duration of time which the painting spent acquiring its particular patina. This work is from a series of canvases placed at the Haus am Waldsee in advance of Karin Sander's 2018 solo exhibition at the Berlin-based non-profit exhibition space. |

Karin Sander works with situations, their social and historical contexts, involving interventions in existing structures and institutions. The medium the work is realized in is painting, sculpture, electronic media, science, architecture; in brief: each medium is available for working out its specific potential. The intersection of work, recipient and institution, of what is found and what is added, of presence and absence, is emphasized and exhibited.
Sander’s work has been exhibited extensively. Recent solo exhibitions include: Karin Sander, Kunsthalle Tübingen, Tübingen (2021), Transzendenzaufzug, Kunstuniversität Linz, Linz (2020); Karin Sander – Skulptur / Sculpture / Scultura, Museion, Bolzano (2020); 43°45’51.8″N 11°15’46.8″E, Base / Progetti per l'arte, Florence (2020); Karin Sander.
