Next week, the inimitable Barry Moser will deliver this year's Dwiggins Lecture, hosted by the Society of Printers. To honor his prolific career as a designer, illustrator, and printer, we've assembled a representative sampling of work, including several recent acquisitions. A broadside for a production of The Merry Wives of Windsor plays the happy role as an example of printing from one of Moser’s earliest imprints – the Castillia Press. A copy of the Pennyroyal Press Through the Looking Glass mirrors a dreamy print of Alice’s sister in “reverie”. Experiments in design for the Western canon continue with Frankenstein, also issued under the Pennyroyal imprint. Moser's essay on wood engraving, his illustrated ode to predecessors in printing, and one of the large resingrave prints from his massive Pennyroyal/Caxton Bible keep the score in the play between words and images.
The Dwiggins Lecture will be held at the Central Branch of the Boston Public Library on Thursday, April 2nd from 6:00pm to 7:30pm. During the hour prior to the talk, BPL's Special Collections will host an open house, with works by Moser and Pennyroyal on display.
