We are delighted to announce that Golnaz Afraz has joined the Gallery's roster of International Contemporary Artists. Golnaz Afraz was born in Tehran and now lives and works in Strasbourg, France.

In her paintings the artist explores a variety of themes, as experienced in her everyday life, remembered, or seen in a play or a movie. Without imposing any conclusions, her canvases are painted in multiple layers, depicting various fragments of time on the same plane and superimposing forms. Colour is used freely, while sections of the paintings are left unfinished or in sketch form in order to give some breathing space to the work.

Central to Afraz’s paintings are female portraits which are depicted either with their eyes closed, wearing glasses or having part of their faces covered by flowers or plants. In this way the artist takes a critical viewpoint towards the veil that must be worn by women in her home-country Iran, which is one of the many restrictions towards freedom of expression and equality.

Golnaz Afraz holds a BA in Painting from the University of Azad in Tehran, a Master’s degree in Visual Arts from the University of Strasburg and a Master’s in Painting from the University of Tarbiat Modarres in Tehran. In 2015 she won the first prize at the Saatchi Art Showdown “Painted Word”, while her work has been exhibited in 11 solo and 35 group exhibitions in Europe and Asia including Art Paris and London Art Fair.
