Memories of loss, carried on the waves,
Eyes filled with maelstrom
Anchored to the port.
Faith of endurance,
Congregation outstretching,
Bowers adorned in palette;
An arc to shield within.
The hymn of endurance
of sacrifice and ascension,
Madonna of the Waves
Crowned by scales.
The mother, the loved, the servant by feet
Foreboding temptation, apposing sacrifice,
Duty of survival against foreboding skies,
Unwavering endurance
The Sea Maiden exalts.

Three paintings flood our ancient walls in Rye; his wife Helen the resolute, and the Madonnas’ of the Sea. A tempestuous career, Bellany is a huge influence and inspiration of mine. Perhaps even guiding my resoluteness to telling the truth in art with those that dominate and are steadfast in this commitment to speaking their truths. M Penturo

A hugely acclaimed painter, embedded in our history of art books, his paintings have worldwide recognition and are housed within major collections to include: The Tate, British Council, British Museum, Metropolitan Museum, MOMA,V&A and Scottish National Gallery to name but a few.
Bellany’s relentless dedication in the portrayal of the sea-maiden’s laments he remembered at Port Seton, the hardy Scottish fishing communities and the churches that served and shielded them, dominated his career, closely brought him to death, yet continued to provoke and inspire artists and admirers worldwide. Damian Hirst’s Newport Gallery, celebrated John's career and importance with a major Bellany solo show, praising him as “one of the major painters of the 20th century”.

For John, perhaps, his last show, his Retrospective at the RSA - A lifelong show that saw him receive the keys to his city of Edinburgh and recognition for the deep portrayal of his beloved Scotland, may have been the pinnacle of his career and was to be his last.
