Athenkosi Kwinana
Curated by Candice Berman
7 September - 20 October 2024

This weekend Ndijongile opened with a exhibition walk through led by artist, Athenkosi Kwinana, and curator, Candice Berman. Athenkosi shared her personal experience as a person living with albinism and how this influences her art as a visual activist. We are grateful to everyone who pinned a yellow ribbon to their chests in support of albinism awareness month.

Athenkosi Kwinana’s solo exhibition, Ndijongile, translates from Xhosa to ‘I have looked’. It creates a platform for representations of people with Albinism in South African visual culture over the past two decades (2004–2024).

In addition to showcasing her own work, she has incorporated a group exhibition that features the artistic voices of other artists who share her interest in depicting albinism. This collaborative effort challenges the historical lack of representation of PWA and seeks to broaden the scope of how the albinotic body is portrayed in art and society.

Albinism Awareness Month Group Exhibition
Curated by Candice Berman
7 September - 20 October 2024

The exhibition includes the work of photographers Andile Bhala, Simphiwe Vilakazi, and Nkanyezi Gumede, along with fashion-focused artist Kamogelo Machaba. Each of these artists has contributed pieces that normalise the presentation of the albinotic body, while also expanding its representation in a naturalistic and realistic way. Their work provides a nuanced reflection of the albinotic experience, encouraging audiences to consider the ways in which beauty and identity are constructed in South African visual culture. Additionally, the inclusion of renowned artist Pieter Hugo, who has long engaged with the representation of PWA, brings a further layer of depth to the discussion of the albinotic body in art.

Athenkosi Kwinana as a panelist at FAME Week Africa

"I am honoured to have spoken on the #PowerOfInclusivity panel about the importance of diversity and inclusion in disability-representation across art, film, and media at FAME Week Africa and MIP Markets. I am also grateful for the power team that I had the privilege of working alongside with, and also for the opportunity to discuss how we can create more inclusive and authentic portrayals.

Shades Unseen: A Reflection On Albinism In South African Art By Nolan Stevens | Between 10 and 5

Since the dawn of democracy, South African art has been deeply entwined with issues of identity, reflecting a long history of suppressed self-expression under apartheid. For many marginalised groups, including people with albinism (PWA), these artistic spaces have often overlooked their presence and experiences. However, artists like Athenkosi Kwinana are working to change that narrative.
