Director's Note
Dear Patrons,
It is a pleasure to write to you once again, with much having unfolded at Antarang over the past two months and more to look forward to.
Our inaugural annual flagship exhibition, Resonance: The Foundation Edition, is currently on view at the gallery through September 30. Bringing together significant voices of modern and contemporary Indian art in dialogue, the exhibition offers a layered engagement with diverse practices, generations and concerns. The opening brought together members of the art fraternity, collectors and the wider community, and featured a conversation led by curator Kishore Singh, inviting guests to share their perspectives on the works, alongside a live painting experience with Seema Kohli. The evening reflected the collaborative spirit at the heart of Antarang.
Previously, UNDER 10 | Edition II presented a selection of works by masters of modern and contemporary Indian art, all under ₹10 lakhs, spanning diverse styles and mediums, and received an encouraging response from our collector community.
Our third Curious Collector session, led by conservator Anupama Gaur, offered valuable insights into the principles of conservation and the care of artworks and treasured objects. Participants brought their own questions and objects into the conversation, making it an especially enriching experience.
As we approach Janmashtami, we look forward to a special week-long spotlight showcase of Jai Khanna at the Clubhouse. There is much more to come, and we look forward to welcoming you to the gallery and continuing these conversations.

Impressions, observations, and opinions metamorphose into art, as a response to nature, pastoral and urban spaces, people, issues of identity and gender, faith, legends, mythology, and politics. Thematically diverse, we showcase masters of Indian modern and contemporary art, forging a conversation through paintings, prints, sketches, and sculptures.
We see the impact of changing times, the influence of mentors and schools, of travel and cultural exchange on the artists and their work through the representation of the body, of exuberant form, and of attention paid to human experience. The works highlight vulnerability, challenge misogyny, celebrate bravery, and quietly witness the world, all with exceptional technical and stylistic panache.
Trained in an art school or self-taught, these accomplished artists have a unique voice, even as the work reflects the zeitgeist of their time. It is this resonance that Antarang seeks to bring to the fore in the annual exhibition.

Antarang cordially invites you to the fourth edition of the Spotlight series, showcasing selected works by artist Jai Khanna on the special occasion of Janmashtami.
The centerpiece of this exhibition is Khanna’s dramatic masterpiece,
Prakriti Gopala.
He held the mountain to shelter a world.
Experience Jai Khanna’s dramatic depiction of Krishna and Govardhan Parvat, an immersive work capturing a moment of divine grace. Beyond the central feat, Khanna turns his focus to the mesmerized world of creatures surrounding the deity, from the majestic Garuda to serene cows and peacocks, all held spellbound in Krishna’s presence.Where Govardhan Parvat stands as a timeless symbol of protection and sanctuary, the work highlights a glorious presentation of nature and all its elements coming together in the form of Prakriti Gopala.
Join us for high tea with the artist Jai Khanna, who will share the profound inspiration behind his creations.

Antarang presented the second edition of Under 10. This thoughtfully curated exhibition brought together an exceptional selection of works by celebrated South Asian modern and contemporary masters, with every artwork priced under INR 10 lakhs. Offering a rare opportunity to acquire investment-grade works, the exhibition made collecting more accessible to both seasoned collectors and those beginning their collecting journey.

The Conservator’s Touch - Community Restoration with Anupama Gaur

In the third session of The Curious Collector Series, we turned our attention to the art and science of conservation, an essential yet often overlooked aspect of collecting, with conservator Anupama Gaur, who shared practical tips on caring for artworks and treasured objects. From common handling and storage mistakes to recognising early signs of damage, she also offered a fascinating glimpse into the world of conservation.
The session focused on community conservation, embracing the belief that heritage is a living connection between people, history, and their environment. Participants brought treasured books, postcards, photographs, paintings, and other personal objects for expert advice, reinforcing that preserving our shared heritage begins with caring for what we hold close.
We also explored how modern conservation science can work in dialogue with traditional knowledge, encouraging a more inclusive and holistic approach to preservation. By understanding an object's age, materiality, and care requirements, we not only safeguard personal memories but also cultivate a collective responsibility towards protecting our cultural legacy.

In this work, F. N. Souza’s portraits capture the essence of a character, even as he distorts and exaggerates facial features and expressions. His portrait of a lady is a vibrant, colourful image that shows a woman in the foreground, eyes downcast, covered, but with articulated breasts, and an expressionistic domestic scene in the background. His use of ochre for her skin, the dark hair, and the use of magenta and shades of pink in her dress and background makes for a visually stunning and mesmerising depiction of a young woman.

This composition by Paresh Maity is bright and lively, showcasing a group of artistes, perhaps dancers and musicians from Rajasthan, who are preparing for a performance, wearing bright outfits. Yet, with the rhythm of the lines, colours, patterns, & jaunty angles, the image is contemplative. The figures are not interacting with each other, but are islands unto themselves. The silence makes each figure more human and takes us into the private lives of these performers. |
